August 28-SeptEMBER 10, 2026
Opening Reception August 28 from 6-9 PM
Ali Gray Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new work by Kathy Cotter, featuring layered abstract paintings that explore color, texture, memory, and emotional connection.
Cotter’s relationship with the Outer Cape began in childhood, spending summers in Truro before eventually making Provincetown and Truro her longtime creative home for more than four decades. That enduring connection to place continues to shape her work, which feels deeply rooted in atmosphere, intuition, and spirit rather than direct representation.
A process-driven painter, Cotter approaches each piece through experimentation and discovery. Working across oil painting, encaustic, screen printing, and mixed media, she builds richly textured surfaces that invite viewers to find their own meaning within the work. Her paintings remain intentionally abstract, allowing space for personal interpretation, whether that is a memory recalled, a feeling resurfaced, or a sense of familiarity that cannot quite be named.
At the center of Cotter’s practice is the belief that everything, animate or inanimate, carries its own spirit or essence. Through layers of color, movement, and material, she seeks to reveal something beneath the surface that is felt as much as seen.
Her work has been exhibited in Provincetown, Palm Beach, Miami, Key West, and the Hamptons, and she was among the first artists selected for a residency at the historic Hawthorne Barn in Provincetown. This exhibition celebrates an artist whose work is both deeply personal and universally resonant, abstract paintings that ask viewers not simply to observe, but to feel.
